remember a while back i asked you all to send me pictures of yourself with 'big hair'. i teased about the 80's and how big all of our bangs were???
well, i only got one pic THANK YOU LP and i kinda laid that idea aside.
UNTIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YESTERDAY
I've never been one of those women who got their hair done every six weeks....i've never been that good at keeping up with my 'regrowth' and i've experimemented with my fair share of Ms. Clarol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The past couple days i was getting 'the itch' to get my hair cut.
that feeling comes every so often.
like when i'm feeling i look like every other broad on the street
like when i little boost
like when i'm getting tempted to wear a headband every single day
while waiting while R had her tennis lesson i chatted up a few girlfriends of mine.
we started talking about hair
i mentioned that i was thinking about getting some layers cut
i asked a few of them where they go to get theirs done
we discussed the difference between a dry cut and a wet cut
we talked about pricing and our favorite hair cutting experiences.
mine, was when Pam H now C was working at Glemby's and i went in for a 'cut and color'...the 'weave' was just coming into fashion and she decided to experiment on me. i had become 'the' friend who let her do pretty much anything to their hair.
the weave was spectacular!!! oh wowee...i just loved loved loved it...she cut me into a long bob with these golden streaks throughout!! I remember we went to a party that night...i wore a little black crochet bera hat and this black sailor jacket that i had glued pearls all over the square flap!
anyhooooooooooo....
when i got back to the house, i ran out to get my Aldi shopping done. came home, put away all the goodies....played around with the kids....i had officially made yesterday a no TV day...so we had to stare at one another rather than the screen!!
they were all being civil to one another and i offered to strike a bargain with the big girls............if they afforded me time to run over to Great Clips to get my hair cut...i would afford them some time to wander the mall together!
hey, they are girls............it was a sure bet!!!
so, off i run to Great Clips.
now, we've all discussed how i have a tendancy to have 'short arms' (I'm tempted to change that phrase to 'McCain arms'...but won't out of respect for Papa's Vietnam experience i will not)
Great Clips like Kmart just seem to 'fit me' most of the time.
i can walk in whenever i want and i can get out of there for $15 including tip!!!
what more can a busy mom ask for???
(a chef, a chauferr, a personal trainer....ok, don't answer that question)
i walk in and of course i'm the ONLY customer
of course there is NO ONE visible in the store either
but quickly a girl walks out and up to me and asks me what i want
'a cut' i say
'are you ready' she says
'yep' i answer
we walk over to her station.
now, one can not have any EXPECTATIONS of these type of places.
i mean, there ain't no scented candles burnin' and artwork on the walls...the lighting is pretty much like kroger....and there is hair all over the floor...
YUK>>>i hate that....so i just wedge my Vera in between my legs as she drapes the cape over me.
'do you want your stacked bob again?'
'no, i think i want to do layers'
'ok, how much length do you want off - inch, half-inch'
'lets start with half'inch and see what happens'
she proceeds to spray my head down with cold water
and then begins cutting the back of my hair
she asks me more questions about the length of the layers and if i want bangs
,,,i'll answer so many questions..and then i say 'you know what??? i'm not that neurotic about hair cuts (DUH------I'M IN HERE!!!!!!!!!!!WITH YOU!!!!)
it grows back so ..do what you think will look good.
A very dear former colleague of mine at the college once said to me....
'you know what the difference is between a good haircut and a bad haircut??????'
'Three days'!!!!
Is that not the truth????????????
now, a bad color takes a bit longer...but....
speaking of bad color......i once got a wild hair and dyed my hair RED....i had the insane idea that i'd look good with that Priscella Presley hair...
i showed up at Pam H now C's house with a big stocking hat right after i had done it and we laughed so hard we peed our pants!!!!!!!!!!!
i also dyed my hair once so that i would look like Madonna's in the Papa Don't Preach video. I had that striped shirt and black flats to!!! and of course those black rubber bracelets.......
eh hum...
she cuts and talks to the other stylist behind her about a wedding coming up.
i didn't offer up any comments (i know,,,,WEIRD for me not to comment)
i just sat with my eyes closed....it felt good.....
she finished up and blew me dry
i gave myself the once over....
wasn't too short - told her if i wanted the layers shorter i'd be back
realized again that somewhere in my gene pool someone passed on some wave/curl to me.
i remember my Gram saying how my Aunt Susie had beautiful curly hair as a kid....
so, i'll blame her!! Thanks Aunt Sue!! (by the way, your card brought a tear to my eye)
when i pulled up to the house, the kids were in the front yard playing in the tree and the little pool..
my fashion queen Ms. R got wide eyed and gave me 'the look'....
i knew i just wanted to wash my hair and get my 'tools' out to see what it was REALLY going to look like...
i ran the girls over to the mall...gave them a good speech about how to handle themselves...and ran back home to get started.
as i took the towel off my head...
i could see that i would have to get strategic with 'pool hair'
but i was hopeful...after all.......its JUST hair!!
i got the blow dryer out...and within minutes...no seconds.....
i was transported back to high school
i began drying my hair the exact same way i did when i was sitting on the floor in front of my full length mirror
ash tray and makeup bag to the sides of me (blue eyeshadow and black eyeliner included)
curling iron heating up on the other side
can of TAB sweating water all over the carpet
Stevie Nicks and Phil blaring in the background!!!!!!!!
to my amazement................
as my hair dried i saw that teen age hair do come alive
(too bad it didn't work on my Ass)
i didn't have layers.........
i had feathers...............
it's not so bad...i mean, i recognize the look, i know what to do with it....
when i showed hubby....we laughed how this was high school hair
i just had to compare the style......so i went through some pictures and sure enough............in my Senior Year pictures i have a very similar style....
now,,,,,, if i could just find the blouse with the metallic threads running through it and my long jean jacket and Thom McCan (sp) high heel clogs.................
''''chaiiiiiiiiiin chaiiiiiiiiiiiin chaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnn keep on a burnin.............runnin thru the shadows.....................chaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn'''
and for fun......here is Lori's feathered doo

I have my high school shaggy hair too, only this time I didn't have to get the perm (thanks to hormone changes from bearing children apparently...it gets wavier after each kid!) - and I've got the braces too and they are worse than when I had them the first time :(
