darling date with my daughter

one of the reasons i hired a nanny was to ensure that our children continued to get one on one time with a parent. yesterday was ms. r's turn and she chose to go to CMA..the columbus museum of art......

currently they are running an exhibition To Live Forever. an exhibition of funerary practices of the Egyptians, with an emphasis on the contrast between 'wealthy' dead and the 'poorer' dead. bottom line of this exhibit..HGTV did not invent 'faux painting'...ha! it displayed items that the Egyptians would be burried with. .these items were considered necessary for the 'afterlife'...the Egyptians didn't seem to see any REAL difference between this life and that life...thus they took utilitarian items....mirrors, makeup - you know the drill....made ms. r and i recall the items that we 'sent along' with daddy. to be honest, placing things in doug's casket was not something that i had given any thought to. but, Fr. Lumpe; when he came to go over the funeral arrangements..he suggested that the children and i think about that and if so compelled...float some things along up to heaven. (so to speak)
so: with my darling husband we sent:

a picture of Bob Evans
an empty jar of creamed herring
hammer
square
tape measure
a drawing ms V did
a note from ms. r

mr. k and i talk about how daddy needed those tools to start building us a new house.

CMA devoted a five room gallery area to the exhibit (which isn't much)so we had time to visit my favorites....actually...i don't have favorites...i love their entire collection...

i distinctly remember when i began paying any real attention to art work.....when i was studying in Austria, i made a side trip to Paris and of course the Louvre and as a silly college student snapped pictures of paintings that i probably should not have ....(darn kids) as i wandered the 'salons';i fell in love with the Neo Classical gallery....

Neoclassical Art is a severe and unemotional form of art hearkening back to the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome. Its rigidity was a reaction to the overbred Rococo style and the emotional charged Baroque style. The rise of Neoclassical Art was part of a general revival of interest in classical thought, which was of some importance in the American and French revolutions.

this painting in particular that just grabbed me and wouldn't let me go is Le Retour de Marcus Sextus by Guerin

this style of painting just makes you FEEL the void...at least for me.
but as much as i love the dramatic i also love the impressionists....they see the world the way i do without my glasses.....just kind of fuzzy....and i find that when i take my glasses off i just don't get so involved with the world around me....i give myself permission to selfishly commit only to myself....

this particular visit i was not drawn to any of Aminah Robinson's work. (unusual for me) she is a well known artist from right here in town....she is a mixed media expert and uses buttons, kente clothes, feathers, shells and all kind of other found items. she uses them to create Ginormous story telling clothes. they are very soft, very colorful and very alive...

funny how...art can imitate life...or i should say how interesting it is that our choices of art imitate our emotional state....good thing i'm not rich...i'd have rearrange my 'collections' every so often to match my ever changing moods..:)

ANYWAY>>>>>>>

so my peachy girl and i wandered through the photography exhibits and the childrens' exhibits some of her favorites were mummified dogs, her all time favorite is the larger than life Chihuly installation. she remembers coming here for first saturday art classes...we wandered the halls...held hands... a nice time....
on the way home we picked up some Chipoltle. she is getting taller....my baby girl is no long so................
