he is all hooked up and getting a drip now!

by the time i dropped the kids off and got to my rosary cirlce douglas had already called the doc (and the doc had already called our house as i heard on my answering machine later)and he rang me to say 'they said come right now'.
my poor friend Barb - we hadn't even gotten our coffee poured when i'm looking at her to ask if Mr. K can hang out for a bit. she said yes, as she has many times since this whole ordeal has begun! she filled a travel mug of coffee and sent me on my way within minutes!! thanks barb!!

baby k and i hop in the car and go get daddy.
we go down to the oncologist office.
get right in..i mean right in...NO WAIT!!
Dr. Smith comes in, goes down the previous reports/scans.
(he is from NY and did his fellowship in Buffalo so we talked about snow and how the nicest people in the world live in Buffalo, NY)
He gave douglas a physical exam.
everyone is interested in Doug's fingernails/toenails.
he has what is called 'clubbing'...but i laugh because his nails/toenails have always been a fasination with his friends, always said he could climb trees with those feet! ha ha.. he just has some big fingernails.
Doctor decides that it could just be in his DNA...and moved on!
Here is what he said:
Yes, you have lung cancer
yes it has gone to your sacrum (tailbone) via your blood stream
this is not a small problem
the best treatment is Chemo at this time.
cocktail of three chemo meds plus a bone med
1. carbolptlatin (sp)
2. taxol
3. avastin (this is a targeting drug, this made me happy)
4. Zomeda (this is the bone med that helps the 'bone mets')

doug will get all of the above today (right now) plus some anti-nausia
we will go back in three weeks for another round
after this second round he will get another scan to look for tumor reduction
we can then discuss radiation again.
no radiation at this time.
he shared all the side effects but indicated that douglas is young and otherwise healthy and he could possibly have no side effects!
he ran down the vitamin/supplements that he is taking, and like most docs they say they won't tell you TO take them or NOT TO take them.
they aren't controlled/regulated yada yadda yadda.

the doc then said 'i hear you are ready to start'? doug said yes.
doc said, well so am i, so off you go.

before leaving the room i of course had to do the 'sherilynn thing'.
i looked him in the eyes and asked 'are you up to fighting this battle ALL the way with us?' (i'm getting much better at these tough questions without tears)
he looked me equally square in the eyes and said "yes i am".
he stood up and i leaned in to hug him, and he hugged me and baby K right back!!!

doug, baby k and i headed back down the hall toward the treatment room, no children allowed back there so of course i couldn't go in where all the recliners are.
we kissed - he walked in.
i turned to the nurses and told those women 'i know he is cute but he is mine'!!!
they smiled..i think he is in good hands...steady hands i hope...please Lord steady hands!!

called Amy Z. ran down the drug list...
called my folks - they were already here and buying some time at Dinosaur World!!
i picked up Mr. K
and we all met up at our house.

they will be going to pick up girls from school and then i hope run through Starbucks!! a Java Chip sure would hit the spot right now!!
i got our EMO care package!!! how sweet of all of you!!! can't wait to share with everyone.
douglas will call me when 'they hang my last bag'
when i talked to him last he said he was tired and going to 'try' and nap.
yeah, like don't we all know that he will fall right asleep...that man can sleep anywhere!!
the plans this evening remain the same: dinner with Barb and Don along with my parents.
tomorrow douglas expects to go out shooting at Ken's in the morning and mom and bert are taking big girls to Opry Land/Mills.
i work tomorrow evening(will play that by ear)

sister Erin has gotten busy knitting a hat
if left to his own devises you know he'll go get an Elmer Fud hat...so knit quick sister!!! knit quick!!

baby k is down for her nap and i'm going to try and mr. k down as well until daddy calls.!!

MB,
It is not by my hand!!
i carry this visualization in my mind that i told once or twice. you know that poem Footprints in the sand? i had always felt kind of detached from that poem, it seemed to 'soft' to me. too, i don't know, too expected!! when douglas started to travel last year...i got reaquainted with that poem..and this time i made my own image of the Lord carrying me. mine looks like what happens when your two year old learns what a piggy back ride is like...when they strangle you around the neck and claw at your back with their feet. that is me on the Lord's back right now...just hanging on and letting him do the walking...and trying to remember to let him do the talking as well!!

i will be honest, i have asked 'why me' 'why us' and you know what i came to the conclusion that...why NOT me and why NOT us??? i am no more deserving of blessing or trials than the next person!!

so there you have it..i'm not stronger than anyone else..just living on my faith...the faith that i have learned to have from our community - our family and our friends near and far!!!
thanks for keeping watch,
sheri

Amen, sister. You have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 peter 1:6,7

Your faith in Him will see you to victory in this race. e

I'm so glad that you've also found your way to Ken Janzen's Blog. Kenny needs to know that he is not alone in such a fight and that neither are you folks, as families sticken with cancer.

Sheri, my heart goes out to you, your baby boy and to Douglas, your husband. You noted that he was a Desert Storm Vet. I loved the photo of him and your son at the foot of the Veterans Monument. Here in Canada we honour our vets on November 11th with Remebrance Day. Sheri, we owe so much to people like your husband. I'm so glad you have found your way to Kenny's blog.

Maybe you can get Peggy Jantzen's email address for direct sharing. I'll keep tabs on your entries. My wife, Marjorie, and I will be praying for you and your family as well.
